Dear Recipients of the Preservation Society Newsletter:
As Tolstoy wrote in Anna Karenina, “Spring is the time of plans and projects,” and that is certainly the case here at the Society. We are on the very cusp of spring vegetables– ramps, rhubarb and more are all on their way. It is impossible not to get excited, even on a grey day such as this.
First off, we have two workshops to announce for the month of April. Thanks to its wild popularity, the Dark Art of Marmalade will make one more appearance before making way for more summery canning classes. The workshop covers the history and types of marmalade as well as basic canning safety. The cost is $40 and includes a jar of marmalade and light refreshments. It takes place Thursday, April 26th at 7pm. Reserve now– don’t miss out!!
On April 29th at 3pm, Perfect Pies 101 returns. Sample delicious pies and learn a revolutionary method for making the very best crusts. Elementary science is also discussed. The cost is $35 and includes ample pie and coffee. What lovelier way to spend an afternoon?
In other excellent news for drinkers of beer, our Pickled Eggs are now being served at both Cheval Blanc and Dieu du Ciel here in Montreal! You don’t have to wait for Pickled Egg Fest 2013 or commit to an entire litre order! You can just waltz into either of these legendary establishments and enjoy an egg with a fantastic microbrew.
Oh! And it’s not just for Christmastime anymore– you can now find out preserves permanently on the shelves of Depanneur Le Pick Up, that palace of pulled pork.
And if you happen to stop by our headquarters at La QV, you will notice the fantastic new artwork by Jaynus O’Donnell. Her beautiful collage and painting works are worth a trip in and of themselves.
To hint at other exciting news, the summer truly bodes great things. May will find us collaborating again with vintage boutique La (Found)erie. Just in time for Mother’s Day we’ll be putting together fantastic giftbaskets and the Society will be doing a limited edition bakesale! Then both June and July will find us in Toronto! You can find us a weekend of each month selling our wares at the Spot on Queen, as well as teaching canning workshops. We’ll also be launching our limited edition artist series this summer– the first jam we have lined up is the brainchild of Xiu Xiu‘s Jamie Stewart. The flavour, INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION ENGLAND 1884, was conceived of by Stewart, who will also design the label. Stay tuned for more information.
Last but not least, your DIY tip of the day: trying to figure out what to do with all your leftover Easter Eggs? Pickle them, of course!!
Yes we can.
Love,
Preservation Society
